Three Events in the Books - Major Coming Up!

Dade City, FL and Lake Jovita Country Club hosted The Tampa Tour on Saturday, April 3rd, as 32 golfers teed them up on the North Course. For the first time this year, there was a waiting list for an event, as three members were left out of the event because we could not add a tee time. As promised, there were no straight putts on the day. The greens were a bit inconsistent, with a stretch of greens running pretty quick, and then a stretch where they were slow and not in the best of shape. Members fought through, as if they had a choice, and four members finished under par.

Four of the Top five were in the B flight, with only Justin Jones placing from the A flight, taking 32 points with his net 71, good for a fourth place finish. Mario Castillo and Shaun Collins had to feel confident heading into the clubhouse, finishing with net 70 and 69. The Tour, and in his debut in running an event, “Coach” Bill Bley wants to congratulate the first place finisher, taking the B flight with a runaway win at a net 65, Jason Godwin. Mario and Justin placed in the 30s for the second week in a row, setting themselves up for a nice run after their first two events of the year.

Closest to the Pin was taken by Tour veteran and Executive Committee member, Jeremy Dixon, putting his shot inside 4 feet on the picturesque and signature hole, #4. Long Drive was won by another Tour EC member, “Ding Dong” Troy Smith. Both players added 2 points to their daily totals, giving Dixon 22 points, and moving Troy from the cellar to 7 points. Well done Ding Dong!

Pace of play was an issue throughout the day, as the rangers were on groups, regardless of whether anyone was behind them and pushing. While it was a bit much, players must remember that a 4 hour and 45 minute round of golf is not acceptable. Each group should be shooting to complete their round in 4 hours to 4 hours and 15 minutes. In most cases, it is not a matter of rushing preparation to make the next shot. Pace of play typically breaks down when golfers are not playing ready golf, or taking a long time looking for a ball. Also, if you don’t see the group in front of you, you are likely falling a little behind. Please just keep this in mind, as we are requesting that golf courses allow us their first and most prized tee times, which are usually reserved for members.

With that said, let’s move on and get back to the good stuff. After a two week hiatus for the Masters and the Outback Pro AM, the Tampa Tour will bring you the first Major of the year. The Spring League Invitational Tournament, affectionately known as the S.L.I.T, will be kicking off on Saturday, April 24th at 7:45 AM. Due to the waiting list at Lake Jovita, and the higher demand for Majors, we have 36 spots available, with most of those already reserved. If you haven’t reserved your spot yet, I highly encourage you to do so if you are confident that you can play. Aside from the higher point totals available, Legacy is a tremendous course down in the Bradenton area. The round will run $50, and remember all prizes will be awarded on the day of the event. Your event coordinator for Legacy will be Ryan Sanz, with assistance from Troy Smith.

Due to the early start time, PLEASE plan accordingly to get there in time and warm up. Courses expect groups to be at the first tee 10 minutes prior to the posted tee time to ensure everyone gets off on time.
